addicted

I'm 8w2d today. My RE said I could stop PIO at 8 weeks. I haven't.

Is it just me, or does it seem like most people stay on it until 10ish weeks? It seems crazy that there's no testing when you go off this stuff. I haven't had my progesterone tested since 4w6d. It was fine then, but how do I know it will be fine if I stop the support now?

I think it would be different if I was having a strong negative reaction to the injections, but I'm not. I don't like it, of course, but it's not the worst thing ever. I had leg/hip soreness for the first three days, but none since then. I'm getting a little bruised and a little sore, but nothing like the horror stories you read. It's just not that bad. And since the RE said it won't hurt anything... well, I just can't seem to quit.

I say do what makes ya feel right. But also? Take into consideration what the good docs say. At some point.

(and thanks for saying they're not that bad ... i've only heard wicked evil things about the pio shots!)

i stayed on my progesterone for 12 weeks. i remember the dr saying i could stop earlier, but i don't think it was as early as 8 weeks. of course i specifically had a progesterone problem... still, i think if i were you i wouldn't stop just yet, either. it's not like there's any risk in continuing. the other option is to switch to an oral like prometrium, if the OB will give it to you. (i did suppositories for 2 weeks, then prometrium the rest of the time.)

The only risk that I know of is that sometimes staying on progesterone too long will cause some bleeding, which generally isn't terribly troublesome, but can be frightening.

What happens is that after the placenta is formed, it takes over the progesterone production, which is why you can eventually stop taking the shots/suppositories/supplements. My clinic stops progesterone supplementation around week 8 for IUI and closer to week 10 for IVF. But there are lots of different protocols. There are some clinics that keep using progesterone supplemnentation well into the second trimester, but as far as I know, the scientific community is still out on whether there's any benefit to that.

Either way, I'm glad you're still doing well.
